Description:
Silver-gray to maroon body, eye red,
tail truncate, pectoral, dorsal and
pelvic fins reddish.
Size:
To 60 cm (24 in).
Habitat,
behavior, and Biology: Rocky
and coral reefs, caves. From the surface
to at least 36 m (120 ft). Almost
always observed in large groups, hanging
motionless in a cave or rocky crevice
by day. Can be observed feeding near
the surface at night, dawn and dusk,
feeds on small fishes and invertebrates.
Shy, slowly moves away when approached.
Abundance:
Common.
Distribution:
From Mazatlán, México
to Perú, and Cocos, Malpelo,
and Galápagos islands.
The Red bass (L.
bohar) occurs from the tropical Indian
Ocean to the western and central Pacific
to the Line Islands.
