Resource Management Plan “Fisheries Management”

Scientific evidence shows that properly managed marine areas increase the diversity and abundance of marine species. Fish that breed within these areas move into surrounding areas, which positively benefits human communities that depend on those species. The benefits of marine protected areas are transferred to adjacent open areas such as marine management areas through the “spillover effect”: when the abundance of individuals within the protected area reaches high levels, there are individuals that migrate out of the reserve in search for food. With the creation of the Bicentennial Marine Management Area, it is necessary to have a joint resource management plan and fisheries management, which allows the sustainable use of one of the areas with the highest productivity in the Eastern Tropical Pacific.
