Improving the management of the newly expanded Cocos Island and Seamounts Protected Areas through key partnerships and stakeholders engagement
Start date: July 2023
Completion date: December 2024
Cooperating Partner: Blue Nature Alliance
Overall Objective:
Strengthen the management and conservation of species and ecosystems of the Cocos Island National Park (CINP) and its surrounding areas.
Project Summary:
This project supports the successful consolidation of the process to expand Cocos Island National Park (CINP) and the creation of the Bicentennial Marine Management Area (BMMA) of the Cocos Marine Conservation Area (CMCA). It offers legal advice as a tool to support the political authorities’ negotiations with key stakeholders and also helps mitigate opposition to this process. It also promotes scientific studies that support this process and collaborates in the socialization and dissemination of information. In addition, to promote the effective management of the CMCA’s Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), FAICO leads the recruitment of specialists to develop key plans and projects, including the Strategic Plan, Financial Plan, and a diagnosis of regular barriers for Oceanic MPAs.
Accountability and Grievance Mechanism
FAICO actively promotes recognizing and respecting the rights of our partners and actors involved in this project, as well as developing and executing best practices in the execution of the project “Improving the management of the newly expanded Cocos Island and Seamounts Protected Areas through key partnerships and stakeholder engagement”. Therefore, we have created a mechanism so that if any person wishes, they can express, respectfully and in accordance with a formal procedure, any complaint, or if the person believes to be negatively affected as a binding actor to the project.
It is in the interest of FAICO to provide timely responses and adequate solutions to any situation that may arise from our partners or stakeholders, in order to improve our management and that of the project.
What is a grievance mechanism?
It is a tool that makes it possible to efficiently and effectively anticipate, collect, record, address, and when possible, attend to and resolve complaints, analyzing the situation and, after this, promoting the necessary information to clarify and/or resolve a specific situation.
Who can file a complaint?
One or several communities, organizations, actors, and stakeholders who believe that they may be negatively affected by the work of FAICO in the execution of the project “Improving the management of the newly expanded Cocos Island and Seamounts Protected Areas through key partnerships and stakeholder engagement”. Information on the identity of the person and/or organization presenting the complaints will be kept by FAICO.
What will happen when I file a complaint?
The complaint will be addressed through an open and transparent process so that you and FAICO can find an appropriate solution to the problem. You will be treated confidentially and protected from retaliation.
