Protocol of the “Cocos Island, Natural Heritage of Humanity Award”

FAICO officially launched the Award “Cocos Island, Natural Heritage of Humanity” in its 2022 edition. This is a program of the Friends of Cocos Island Foundation (FAICO), which began 20 years ago, and which recognizes, nationally and internationally, the work carried out by people, teams, and institutions dedicated to the conservation of marine ecosystems.

The winners will receive an official recognition, as well as the commemorative medal of UNESCO. This award does not represent any economic recognition; it is a symbolic tribute for becoming another Friend of Cocos Island.

During the last 20 years, more than 30 people and organizations have received awards in the following areas:

  • Conservation and Sustainable Development
  • Philanthropy
  • International Cooperation
  • Science and Research
  • Education and Communications

On this occasion, scientists who for years have studied the island’s biodiversity and ecosystems were awarded, as well as leaders in climate change and organizations that joined the efforts to conserve 31% of Costa Rica’s marine territory through the expansion of the marine protected areas of Cocos Island.
