Since 2017 and faced with the need to obtain illegal fishing information (IUU) as it is one of the main threats to Cocos Island, Faico signed a collaboration agreement for the use of the satellite monitoring tools of the “Global Fishing Watch” platform” (GFW), which allows interpreting the data of the Automatic Identification System (AIS) collected by satellites and terrestrial receivers. This tool was key to elaborate the report “Analysis and characterization of the industrial fishing pressure in the ACMC and adjacent areas of the Exclusive Economic Zone of Costa Rica “.
