Mitigating the growing risks of marine invasive species in the Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP)

The marine invasive species represent one of the major threats against the conservation of the marine biodiversity worldwide.

For this reason, Faico, in partnership with the Cocos Marine Conservation Area and the Charles Darwin Foundation, seeks to illustrate the scale at which the marine invasive species are present in two marine protected areas within the Eastern Tropical Pacific ecoregion: Galapagos Marine Reserve (GMR) and Cocos Island National Park. The results are intended to minimize the negative impact of invasive species on marine biodiversity and on ecosystem services, in order to enhance the health of the marine environments of these UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In addition, the project aims to replicate current biosecurity measures in the GMR and apply lessons learned from this marine protected area to the others, helping to improve the marine biosecurity in the ETP region.
